Preparation Supplies you will need for your new pup

A new puppy will need new supplies.  Not only are you spending money on the price of the dog (& shipping or travel costs, if necessary) but also all the goodies he will need when you get him home with you.

Here’s a list of some of the initial items you may want to pick up from your pet store before the puppy arrives to you:

  • An ex-pen,  playpen or sectioned off area (a private sectioned off space safe for him), something to confine him to when he isn’t being watched & large enough to walk around in
  • A plastic travel crate to put your puppy in for the drive home (you won’t need this if I am shipping your pup to you because he will arrive in one)
  • NutroMax puppy food, you can pick up a small bag of this then a large bag of whatever other food you choose to give him then slowly switch from Nutro to your choice over 1-2 wks. So his gut gets used to the change
  • A warm cozy bed
  • Potty pads, dog litter, or whatever else you want to use for the potty, until he is old enough to go outside (they shouldn’t touch the outside floor or any public floors at all until they are done with shots at about 17 wks old, to be safe)
  • A few jars of chicken, turkey or beef baby food to entice him & butter him up while he is still adjusting, he will love you for this!
  • NutriCal or NutriStat-give him this for the first week while with you to ensure he is getting enough calories in case he gets homesick/stress/or not eating enough  (my clients tell me they didn’t ever need this but I recommend you buy it anyway)
  • Snuggle safe heat disc-put in microwave & it keeps warm all night, give him room enough to move away from it in case he gets too warm-this item is much safer than an elect. heating pad
  • Food and water bowl, ceramic is preferred since it doesn’t tip as easily from the heavy weight
  • Plush Toys pref. with a squeeker inside (dogs choose a favorite toy, so don’t buy so many at once)
  • Treats, or you can just use the meat baby food or nutrical as a treat
  • Baby nail clippers & styptic powder (stops bleeding if you cut nail too far down)
  • Mild baby shampoo (Do not give the first bath until the puppy trusts you at least after 10 days of being with you, do not bathe past 2:00pm, bathe only in the morning on a sunny warm day, dry very well!)
  • Blankets (fleece Is preferred)

Things that can wait until a little later:

Leash, collar, harness-put your pup in the crate for vet visits as it is much safer, clothes, brush, baby powder, etc.

If I see you in person when I transer the puppy over to you (you come to pick up at my house, we meet up somewhere to lessen your drive, or I deliver to your door) then you will receive a bag of goodies.  These are just odds and ends type of extras that any dog owner can use more of, but you will need to buy the major things like what is listed above.

If your pup is being shipped to you then you will need to pay a $20 fee for mailing the goodie bag to you if you want it, otherwise you won’t receive it.

What’s included in the bonus goodie bag?

That all depends on what I chose to purchase and what I have on hand.  It may or may not be items mentioned here:

  • His brand of Puppy food-NutroMax
  • 2 or 3 Fleece blankets
  • Nail trimmers
  • Potty pads
  • Assorted Treats/snacks-hard type & soft type
  • Special puppy cleansing wipes (to use to freshen up the pup instead of a bath for the first weeks)
  • A few Fleece toys with a squeeker inside
  • Nutri-Cal
  • Baby food meats-chicken, turkey, beef, lamb, ham, veal
  • Sweater
  • Leash, harness or collar
  • Food/water bowls
  • Flea prevention-Advantage or Frontline

Every puppy will come with his shot/medical record and a health contract that lists what is guaranteed.
